Mr. Jennings was appointed as the first Sheriff of Livingston County Missouri in February 1837 by Missouri Governor Lilburn W. Boggs.

 

Mr. Jennings is reported to have served in the capacity of sheriff for many years.  Mr. Jennings was shot on January 29, 1862 as he was walking on West Calhoun Street in Chillicothe.  Mr. Jennings passed away the following day.  The murderer was thought to be someone who had a personal issue with Mr. Jennings.
