The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) has received calls from several citizens regarding attempts to SCAM them for personal identification and/or money.
Some of these have involved the criminals spoofing the phone number they are calling from to appear to be a local phone number. Some of these scammers are offering lower interest rates on credit cards or to consolidate debt.
Another SCAM is by phone and email attempting to get you to believe your online banking site is being used to obtain airline tickets and somehow circumvent safety and security of airports. This group tries to play on those willing to help and still obtain your personal identification and/or account information.
The best thing to do when you are contacted by these people is simply hang-up or delete the email and DO NOT open the email or attachments as there could be a virus or malware which infects or steals information from your computer.
Fortunately we have not received any reports of actual victims. Our goal is to educate the public so we do not have any victims.
