Emotional Support for a Young Victim

child hiding her eyes

This morning I was very impressed with an event at the Courthouse which should really have never had to take place.  I witnessed a young child report to Court with her mother and have to testify about being a victim of a very serious personal attack upon herself while in her bed in her home.  The alleged suspect was in court with his public defender.

In and of itself to be a victim of such a personal attack is scary enough, but for a young child and being required to tell the Judge, Prosecutor, and everyone about what happened has to be extremely frightening.

I saw about 15 people associated with the Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) who came to the preliminary hearing strictly for emotional support of the victim.  Keep in mind several of these men and women were not from Livingston County with at least one resides in St. Joseph.  The B.A.C.A. members did this at their own expense and strictly to support the victim.  After testifying I witnessed the young girl hug many of these new friends and refer to some as “Uncle”.

The men and women from B.A.C.A. most likely had never known this young victim or her family prior to this event.  It was very emotional to see these people extending their strength, support, and hearts to the young victim and help her get through this very difficult day.

I would like to compliment and commend the B.A.C.A. members who were present in the Livingston County Courthouse today.  From what I witnessed you definitely have my respect and appreciation.

Sincerely,

Steve Cox
