4th of July and Safety

The 4th of July is almost here and with that is a lot of time with family and friends, great food, relaxation, and many will have fireworks. Everyone at the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office wants you to have a fun but safe holiday and make some life long memories.

A few quick things to remember:

Use common sense when igniting fireworks.

Not every person enjoys fireworks and we should respect their position.

Consider the age of the user and if the user is old enough and has the proper supervision.

Know the law on use of fireworks in your community. Chillicothe has specific ordinance(s) which cover this while rural Livingston County does not.

Keep your neighbors and land owners in mind for when and where you set off fireworks. It has been really dry here this year and will most likely be an increased level of fire danger unless we get rain.

The holiday brings a lot of excitement and people can quickly get hurt by fireworks.

Keep area pets and other animals in mind when setting off fireworks. Some animals may be extremely frightened while others may try to catch what you throw.

Show respect and pick up your litter, leaving spent fireworks in the road or on private property is littering. Trust me the fine and loss of pride will cost way more than the fireworks. And we would rather now need to deal with it.

Be prepared for the worst, have water close by, and remember the sunscreen for everyone outside in the day time and bug repellant for those out at night.

No drugs or alcohol should be used for those who are driving or setting off fireworks.

Last, we should always give thanks to our great country and to everyone who has and continues to fight for our freedoms and protects our country and citizens.

In closing, have a blast and enjoy whatever it is you will be doing but please be safe.
