pledge to drive safely

During the afternoon of August 24, 2018 Sheriff Cox checked an eastbound car at 86 in a 65 in a very careless manner on U.S. 36 Highway.  After the sheriff turned to stop the car the driver nearly had a collision with another eastbound vehicle in attempt to quickly pull to the side of the road and exit the vehicle with a child. The driver was digging through the trunk and assistance responded due to the very unusual behavior and multiple adult occupants in the vehicle. Later the driver admitted to attempting to elude being stopped and appear to be on the side of the roadway getting something for the child from the trunk.

The 3 adults and 1 child were headed to Chicago in a rental car that was not rented to them. Further investigation resulted in the driver being arrested for alleged No Valid Driver’s License, 86 in a 65, and Possession of Marijuana.

A deputy identified a passenger as a 22 year old Chicago man and he was arrested for alleged possession of marijuana. That suspect is on probation/parole for aggravated robbery & weapons offense in Illinois. Information was shared with the suspect’s probation/parole officer.

Another passenger, Antonio E. Spraggins, 24, Kansas City was also arrested on Platte County arrest warrants for alleged Failing to Appear in Court on Driving While Suspended/Revoked License and Failing to Register Motor Vehicle Annually. Mr. Spraggins also allegedly chose to physically resist arrest from the LCSO and was placed on the ground to complete handcuffing. Mr. Spraggins was transferred to the Daviess Dekalb County Regional Jail in lieu of bond. Additional charges are being sought on this suspect.

The child remained at the LCSO with the father and additional family was contacted to assist these people. A mandated report to the Child Abuse/Neglect Hotline was made.
