Meet Deputy Brandon Johnson

06/29/2023

Deputy Johnson Brandon

At the LCSO our goal is to humanize the badge and give the community opportunity to get to know the members of the sheriff's office.  In doing so we are placing the spotlight on Deputy Sheriff Brandon Johnson who started his career at the LCSO in November 2022.

When and why did you get in Law Enforcement?

I graduated from the academy and began at the Chillicothe Police Department in 2016. I wanted a career that was rewarding and would help the community in which I grew up and went to school.

What caused you to lean toward being a deputy sheriff versus a municipal police officer or a state trooper?

I had several friends work for the Sheriff's Office and they loved it. So, when they had an opening I applied and have loved it ever since.

What is different about being a deputy sheriff as compared to a municipal police officer or state trooper?

My main duty is court security, so it is totally different than being a road patrol officer. This is a completely different side of Law Enforcement.

Please tell us about what you do as a Deputy for the LCSO?

My main duties are to protect the courthouse and everyone in it. I run the metal detector, check anyone entering for weapons or contraband and help the transport team guard detainees.

Would you please share some things which you have been really proud of during your career?

My proudest moments are working and solving burglary cases, arresting dangerous people, and graduating from the combat medic class. I have received multiple letters of commendation for various things as well.

Can we learn some of the more difficult things you have experienced during your career?

Working the fatality accident in Chillicothe was one of the hardest things I have ever experienced. Being involved in the officer involved shootings as well.

How do you deal with the excessive stress of the job?

I try my best to leave work at work and not bring it home. Spending time with friends and family is very important. My kids are the best at making my days better. They motivate me to be a better person and deputy.

What are some fun things with your job?

I love everyone I work with at the Sheriff's Office and the courthouse. So, coming to work is easy when you enjoy it. I enjoy interacting with the public and meeting new people.

If you could do one thing to make things different in society, what would that be?

Have people be held accountable for their actions. I feel that people deserve a chance to change but at some point, need to be held accountable.

Do you have any advice for anyone considering a law enforcement career?

It is very rewarding but very difficult as well. Your good days are great, but the bad days are very hard. My best advice is to do multiple ride-along's and see if you are still interested in a career.

What kind of goals do you have?

To be reliable and the best deputy I can be. I want to eventually be a part of the leadership team inside the sheriff's office as well.

Regarding work related training, is there an area or class which really stands out as your favorite?  If so, can you share that with us and why?

Firearms training is my favorite hands down. Deputy Wilson does a great job and is very helpful. We have fun but also learn a lot.

Care to share the least favorite part of your job?

It can be uneventful at times, but I honestly have no complaints.

What are some of the biggest criminal issues you see in and around Livingston County?

Drug related crimes and property crimes. The two usually go hand in hand.

Does Livingston County and the State of Missouri have the resources available for both law enforcement and citizens?

Yes and no.

Please explain:

Livingston County does a great job in taking care of us. On the state level, I feel like most services are underfunded. Mental health and drug treatment centers are all underfunded and never have adequate resources to serve all of those who need help.

In closing, we are extremely proud of Deputy Brandon Johnson and the work he does for our community.  Deputy Johnson strives to be helpful and is genuinely interested in helping others.  Please share your appreciation to Brandon when you happen to see him.

Thank you for your support and allowing us to be here to serve.

Respectfully,
Steve Cox
