Message from Sheriff Steve Cox

08/31/2024

Hello Livingston County.

Today is my last day of being sheriff and I just wanted to reach out and say THANK YOU one last time for the many years of your friendship and support.  It has truly been an honor to serve here with and for you.

January 01, 2001 was the first day I began serving a Livingston County Sheriff.  We could pay a deputy $17,000, a detention officer $16,000 and a dispatcher only $15,000 a year.  There was no overtime or holiday pay and employees were required to juggle comp time while replacing body for body to cover shifts.  The sheriff and deputies were required to provide their own personal vehicle to use as a patrol car, while the county provided some lights, a radio and maybe a handgun. The staff had very minimal training and the jail operations were grossly understaffed and unprepared to the point of safety concerns for all.  Basically Livingston County was broke and there was not much positive to look forward to.

Our citizens supported our law enforcement tax and gave us a lifeline to slowly being moving upward.  Fast forward to 2024 and I am leaving you with a well-trained group of deputies and employees.  We did close the jail over a decade ago for a variety of reasons that all came down to ability to fund; but this move has actually saved our tax payers a few million dollars in expenses over the last decade.  I am very satisfied as our employees are now provided with excellent equipment to help them be safe while protecting and serving your families.

Thanks to Presiding Commissioner Ed Douglas, County Commission and other Elected Officials in Livingston County we are now much better funded and the commission actually has a reserve and no longer living-broke from year to year.

I am proud of Dustin Woelfle who will be the official Livingston County Sheriff September 01, 2024.  I have had the opportunity to see Dustin grow through the academy and as a deputy and then sergeant with our office.  Dustin is an amazing man with a huge heart and is very intelligent, he has many excellent ideas to help improve services and the entire office.

Thank you again for your past, present and future support of the Livingston County Sheriff's Office.  God Bless and Be safe.

Livingston County Sheriff
